Gripping Craig’s List ad of the day:

Find your Bulgarian soulmate and discover Bulgaria with Velida Agency! Bulgarian singles ladies! Free 7 days trial!

I mean, the ladies come with a seven-day trial? I believe in customer satisfaction, lord knows I do, but that’s really just too much work. Wouldn’t 25 minutes suffice? And, dear god, some of the people on that site are just not the kind of people I’d be paying money for the privilege to meet. You hear what I’m saying? Five-finger discount.

Sadly, not all of us can access the Valida Agency site.

    Or not sadly at all.

Cheryl — hmm, i tested the link. no workie for you? tsk.

anon — why am i “steff” with quotation marks? as if i’m possibly not a steff? an imposter, maybe? a fraud? hack? probably.

I have no problem with the service the site offers, or the rather limited and ignorant practice of marrying within one’s nationality or what have you — my issue is with the incredibly lame advertising, that’s all. I mean, the writing is awful, the concept is lame, the pitch is completely imaginary.

Dear Visitors and Memebers of our web site, you will not find top models or erotica here. However, you can find the inner and authentic beauty of Bulgarian women, carrying intellect and wisdom, coming from the depths of the history in our country, the faith in God and human values. The beauty of our nature mirrors into her eyes, and the wisdom of the centuries makes her a loyal partner in man’s life, who will love and respect her as a person. For those of you who are looking just for fun or casual dating, take this advice from us and don’t waste your time here. This is an agency that exists to make introductions between people seriously interested in meeting someone, with a view to possible marriage. Velida Marriage Agency is a new project, giving the chance and opportunity for Bulgarian women to attain better and different life style.

I mean, that’s so fucking lame.

Let’s be honest: It’s a mail-order bride company, okay? I’ve never really heard of a m.o.b. that was a truly good pairing. But trying to sell your marriage agency as some sort of profound font of human souls smacks of BULLSHIT in my world, all right?

I’m just saying. And you’re wrong, it’s absolutely like me to jump to conclusions and write something about something I know nothing about. I do it all the time. I’m opinionated by nature, not some sort of everything-expert. It’s my attitude and opinionated stance that makes my writing what it is. If I didn’t love my opinion, I’d have nothing to offer. I know enough to comment, not enough to do a report, usually, but when I’m really invested in a topic, I go in with my bases covered and my research done. This topic, I couldn’t give a fuck about, but I’ve incidentally reported on mail-order brides for a college paper way back when, thanks to my efforts writing away to advertisers in the back of Rolling Stone and such for “catalogues.”

Anon — Aww. They look so happy. Shucks. They got their money’s worth. Lovely.

Okay, I think most mail-order bride gigs are bullshit. I think it’s practically legitimized prostitution, and think it’s a mockery of marriage. Or is it?

Depends. Many cultures still have arranged marriages. Marriage for love’s a pretty new concept, just a few centuries old. It was always a negotiation before that (and often still is — get a prenup). So, technically, mail-order briding is just another business deal. But don’t try to fucking tell me it’s all about love and devotion, because what you’re saying is they’re well-behaved and know how to “be loyal” to their man. Great, if I was paying $10K for an introduction, I’d want a little loyalty, too.

Besides, this website looks like shit. It’s just butt-fuckin’-ugly. The photos could all be improved with Photoshop, and if I was in the business of brokering marriages, I’d spend 60 second on each photo, you know? Geez… they’re all so severe.
